Letter From Director
Nancy Dobbs

“I know a bank where the wild thyme blows,
Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows,
Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,
With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine…”

-Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Iii.257-260

I know a town in Georgia whose name is Rome,
Where a Shakespeare festival was indeed born,
For the seven hills and three rivers we call home,
Twice five summers of works we’ve performed…

It was May 31st, 2016. In a painted handkerchief-hem skirt and flowy blouse spilling out of a high-collared leather corset, and with a gold sparkly crown hugged by my auburn curls, I stepped onto the grass as Titania in the first ever festival performance for The Rome Shakespeare Festival. With a parade of energetic and colorful fairies tagging behind me- this fairy queen knew she was helping with the birth of something incredibly beautiful that night.

Ten years ago we were blessed to be invited as guests for Georgia Highland College’s Community Watch with Jon Hershey & Greg Shropshire. I was asked how I felt about being a part of an outdoor, weeklong theatre production. “…if you look at the word festival, it means a prolonged celebration. This is what this is, it’s not just ‘putting on a play’-it is happiness, it is music, it is bringing everything and everyone together…and it’s just phenomenal.” I still feel this same sentiment, especially this year, with this show, and with this cast/crew/volunteers.

So, “Why A Midsummer Night’s Dream?” and “Why now?”

Perhaps I will always have the same answer considering this play, no matter the year or season. Midsummer is one of my favorite works due to how I feel we can all find ways to relate to each group of characters, no matter our background, age, etc. We may be Egeus thinking we know what’s best for our child, we may be one of the Four Lovers remembering young and complicated love, we may see ourselves in The Mechanicals as working citizens gathering to create art for the community, and we may feel we are one of the Fairies feeling drawn to nature and our internal power. Whomever you may feel connected to on this night, we thank you for being here, for supporting the arts, and for playing with us a while. We have made it to this Ten-Year Anniversary because of you.

In closing, please allow me to share my most personal remark…

For those of you who met her, for those of you this will mean something to: may we lift a glass, a flower crown, a cappuccino (with 2 Splendas), a thumbnail to “close the cues”, or a white scarf

…“Hail Gail!”

Kory Adams, Puck

Kory Adams, a Rome, Ga native, has had a long relationship with the Rome Shakespeare Company, with his first show being The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, as Lars Rotmenson and Timon of Athens as Old Athenian. Kory was also involved in many Rome High School productions; one of his most notable was as Mitch Mahoney in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. In recent memory, Kory has been in some Berry College operas, such as Sweeney Todd and The Impresario, and notable choir concerts. Kory is now a junior music business major at Berry College and serves as the office assistant at Berry College Theater Company. In his spare time, Kory enjoys producing music, spending time with loved ones, and enjoying a good horror and/or comedy movie here and there. He would like to thank Nancy Dobbs & The Midsummer cast for making this show a beautiful experience, John & Randy for their donor support as a Gate Scholar, and God, along with his momma, Cheryl Adams, for his life! One he wouldn’t trade for anything!

Mack Bollen, Snug the Joiner

Mack is very excited to be a part of his first production in the Rome Shakespeare Festival. You may have seen him in the past year as Aaron Samuels in Rome Little Theatre's Mean Girls Jr., or Coosa High Schools Beetlejuice Jr. You can catch him October 7th, 8th, or 11th in Spamalot at Coosa High School. He says "Please come!" He hopes you enjoy A Midsummer Night's Dream!

Copy of Sarah Beth Bridges_edited.jpg

Sara Beth Bridges, Mustardseed

Sara Beth, a spicy redhead with a flair for the dramatic, is absolutely thrilled to make her first appearance with the Rome Shakespeare Festival! You may have seen this fiery redhead lighting up the stage with the Armuchee Elementary Chorus, or in the church choir just to name a few. Sara Beth would like to give a huge thank-you to Ms. Nancy for this incredible opportunity, and to her friends and family for always cheering her on and supporting her adventures—both onstage and off. She hopes you enjoy the show and embrace a little magic.

Copy of Nola Byrum_edited.jpg

Nola is so excited to be part of this amazing show. Some of her previous roles include Miranda in The Tempest, Valentine in Two Gentlemen of Verona, and The Good Angel in Doctor Faustus. She would like to thank Nancy for trusting her with her dream role of Hermia, her mom, her best friend, and her boyfriend for all of their encouragement and support in all of her creative endeavors, and God for providing her this opportunity and giving her a passion for the arts. She hopes each and every audience member feels as uplifted and inspired by this show as she has.

Copy of Brian Hales_edited.jpg

Brian is a veteran of between 60 or 70 productions from college, to community theatre, improv, etc.. He’s enjoyed a lot of plum parts but has most enjoyed the friends made through theatre over the years. He’s grateful for the support of fiancée Tammi, brother Brucie and Buddy the wonder dog.

Copy of Andrew McDaniel_edited.jpg

Andrew McDaniel, Egeus

Andrew McDaniel ("Egeus") is elated to be working with Shakespeare again, after his last appearance had him comically bumbling in Gilbert and Sullivan. An inhabitant of Rome, this marks his tenth time performing with the Rome Shakespeare Festival having played roles in "Pirates of Penzance", "The Merry Wives of Windsor", "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Julius Caesar", "Romeo and Juliet & Zombies", "The Tempest", "Hamlet", "Two Gentlemen of Verona", and "The Fantasticks". He would like to thank his family for supporting him and Director Nancy Dobbs for giving him the opportunity to be part of this production.

Copy of Jessica Walker_edited.jpg

Jessica Walker, Hippolyta

After two decades away from the stage, Jessica is returning to theater with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Much of those years were spent raising a family and building a life outside of theater, but the performer in her was just waiting for the curtain to rise again. This return to the stage is a chance to reclaim her creativity, her confidence, and her right to take up space. Don’t call it a comeback. Turns out, 20 years was just an intermission.

Maddie Bowers, Moth

Maddie Bowers is 7 years old and making her theatrical debut as the fairy, Moth, in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the Rome Shakespeare Festival. She has been all things from an orange Oompa Loompa in third grade to Karessa in Tick, Tick…Boom! last year as a new mom. Sarah would like to thank her husband Zac for encouraging her to join the community and Nancy for the incredible opportunity to be a part of this show. She hopes that for all who join us for the show it’s an absolute dream!

While Kim is no stranger to the stage, this is her first foray into Shakespeare. Kim started out on stage with RLT in the early 2000's.  She has been taking a break to work on television and film.
